I am what I am but, what am I to you Do I sit back and hold it in while you what you do Am I existing only to be a holder of a warm sweet treasure Am I only good for you as you dilly out a measure Am I used for holding your watered down courage Am I the toast of the town or respected in a marriage I am what I am but, what am I to you Do I sit back and hold it in while you what you do Am I also abused by the innocent as I am tossed to and fro Am I to be revered by them if they only go by what they know Am I to maintain an old man’s folly and his smile Am I to retain seasonings of life be it spicy, hot or mild Am I just to be put away and left alone on a shelf Am I so precious to you that you will keep me for yourself I am what I am but, what am I to you Do I sit back and hold it all in while you what you do Nah, this cups got feelings Copyright 2008 by Arene |
"I Am OK Being Black"
Prelude to
"The Buyer and the Seller: My History” |
 |
Made from Africans selling and White man’s buying and neither claiming
Today, let us accept who we are as we are and stop with all this blaming
15 children, dark, light, straight, curly, kinky hair, short and tall
Reared and disciplined by our parents, love given equally to all
Inside our doors, we laughed and shared moments whether good or bad
We did not have privileges like most, but were happy for what we had
We often found it strange when someone who looked like us would say
‘Girl, you got good hair-slap on grease and water and leave it that way”
Made from Africans selling and White man’s buying and neither claiming
Today, let us accept who we are as we are and stop with all this blaming
My brothers hazel eyes and lighter skin back then gave the girls a thrill
When he married the dark brown girl, they thought he must have been ill
If you have a problem with who you are and think not to like your skin
Do not think I feel the same as you because I like myself from within
To the lady who thought it a need to tell me once pressed, her hair is long
Think I am into the good hair foolishness- then you got me figured wrong
Made from Africans selling and White man’s buying and neither claiming
Today, let us accept who we are as we are and stop with all this blaming
To those who want to claim Indian heritage to dilute out their blackness
Check out what Tina Turner found from her DNA, I hope you do get this
African American Lives II revealed something I have always thought
Blacks are a people created in the middle: no shame, it is not our fault
Stop trying to dilute who we are by saying we’re mixed with the other
If we are rotten in the inside, to hell with the exterior or our color
Made from Africans selling and White man’s buying and neither claiming
Today, let us accept who we are as we are and stop with all this blaming
Let the children know to love themselves and it is ok to be black
If they cannot hear it from you now, the world will set them back
Self hate words from a black man who supposedly had me in his heart
Like me, a young girl will hear someone put her down for being dark
This is why it is important to teach them to love themselves while young
Prejudice has such a longevity here it sometimes seems it has just begun
Made from Africans selling and White man’s buying and neither claiming
Today, let us accept who we are as we are and stop with all this blaming
I am ok with being “Black”-you teach them this while they are young

”Oh Yea, I Seen Her Before” |
 |
I never thought she could be any worse than she was on this day
I saw her divide, destroy and concur in the most vengeful way
I had experienced her rage and hatred toward one who was a King
She never eased of her passion as she found joy in others suffering
She reverberated hatred of one with the beloved name like the cross
She still has not recognized love is freedom and could never be bought
She did does not discriminate to age as young and old suffer her wrath
No exact figure of her destruction exist: who would dare do the math?
The worst thing she has ever done is to make a people turn on themselves
Yet, she did not recognize there exists a remnant of truth that is always left
There she was, as if she never grew tired or older, just as I had seen her
She expressed her hypocritical non -relenting hatred in Hurricane Katrina
Oh yea, I seen her before-that damn, prejudice!

Be the Godly man you are supposed to be Love and protect, but do not uncover me We start out saying we will keep God first In the future, I should not expect to be hurt I love the Lord and intend to stay on track I expect the man for me to watch my back If I am in error, he should turn me around He should lift me up and not put me down Be the Godly man you are supposed to be Love and protect, but do not uncover me He who finds a wife, finds a good thing Be obedient to the Lord or end up suffering I am the weaker vessel as the Lord said so If not able to honor me, then you should go If you are the kind of man who is a player Consequences of all deeds manifest later Be the Godly man you are supposed to be Love and protect, but do not uncover me God has commanded how to treasure such a jewel Be the Godly man instead of breaking all the rules I am a woman who seeks to please the Lord No sampling, do not touch if you can not afford God is a jealous God as it has already been said Keep immoral actions undone- try thinking ahead Be the Godly man you are supposed to be Love and protect, but do not uncover me Guard what is in your heart as well as your mind As the leader, this will help keep us both in line I will always respect you and love you as no other can If God allows me to be yours and you to be my man I am the weaker vessel and my nature is to nurture Do not violate my body and take away my virtue Be the Godly man you are supposed to be Love and protect, but do not uncover me Baby, please keep me covered Copyright©2007, by Arene |

We have a passion for uplifting and loving a people and we hope you all can feel it In spite of the love of money taking control of some of our minds, bodies and spirits Please no more songs putting young ladies down from guys looking like gangster thugs Slapping them, clapping them, crapping them, trapping them instead of giving them hugs No more making babies to control and trap our men ignoring conventional wisdom Whoring them, snowing them, slowing them, flooring them instead of preventing prison Revisiting at least thirty to forty years- like back in the sixties Envisioning those injustices and prejudices: we stayed on our knees We used our mental capacities to keep us one step ahead Now we eat drugs like crazy and fill each other with lead No one has to destroy us today because we do a good job ourselves We do not recognize a true leader: it seems every man is for himself Back then we used to watch what we do, what we say and what we sing Yea, our actions spoke volumes as uplifting each other was our thing We have a passion for uplifting and loving a people and we hope you all can feel it In spite of the love of money taking control of some of our minds, bodies and spirits Please no more songs putting our ladies down from guys looking like gangster thugs Slapping them, clapping them, crapping them, trapping them instead of giving them hugs No more making babies to control and trap our men ignoring conventional wisdom Whoring them, snowing them, slowing them, flooring them instead of preventing prison We have to come together people and take care of each other No matter where we are, we are our children, fathers and mothers Fill our minds with wisdom, our hearts with respect and our spirits with Godly love This is how we can accomplish total health and express what we are made of Formed from the image of God as he breathed life in us and formed us from the ground Recognize our potential and rise above adversity lose self-hate and let self-love be found Honor our multicultural diversity in our people and guard the words from our lips Walk in faith and develop our characters express virtue and not trap with our hips We have a passion for uplifting and loving a people and we hope you all can feel it In spite of the love of money taking control of some of our minds, bodies and spirits Please no more songs putting our ladies down from guys looking like gangster thugs Slapping them, clapping them, crapping them, trapping them instead of giving them hugs No more making babies to control and trap our men ignoring conventional wisdom Whoring them, snowing them, slowing them, flooring them instead of preventing prison Yea, who the master now! This one is dedicated to men who love their families Those men who fear the Lord and do get on their knees How can I go any farther without mentioning these men? These are they who ask for forgiveness whenever they sin You can see them leaving for work as they support their own These are men who lead out in making a house a home They honor their wives showing great love and respect They seek to live peacefully with men and without regrets This one is dedicated to men who love their families Those men who fear the Lord and do get on their knees Not a moment goes by where these men are not a good example Look at their lives closely and notice their blessings are ample When someone is in need, they are always there to offer help These men love in immeasurable ways though their love is felt Their faces express peace and their countenances are like fine gold The Christ within them and beam in their eyes is a sight to behold This one is dedicated to men who love their families Those men who fear the Lord and do get on their knees This is dedicated to you Copyright©, 2007 by Arene |

We cannot hide it, change it, erase it, or correct it once it is completed Only Christ can stand before the throne for us while we remain seated Once a sin is done, there is nothing we can do as it is inked in stone Only Christ can forgive us for sinning, cover it or say “sin be gone” When men and women have relations out of marriage what is, is not what was If men and women marry because of lust instead of God commissioned love All will find before it is done obedience is far better than sacrifice Only God can ordain a man as a husband and a woman as a wife? Things done in secret places and in the dark will one day be revealed Confess and ask forgiveness and at judgment, Jesus will keep them sealed I speak these words after I check myself and I pluck the bolder out of my own eye What person is capable of un-ringing a bell once it is rung no matter how hard they try? We cannot hide it, change it, erase it, or correct it once it is completed Only Christ can stand before the throne for us while we remain seated Once a sin is done, there is nothing we can do as it is inked in stone Only Christ can forgive us for sinning, cover it or say “sin be gone” He who finds a wife finds a good thing and a man is not to waste his seed Has the Lord already not warned of a whorish woman brings a man to his knees? Honor and direct the weaker vessel and not make her as one who is tattered and torn Keep ever present in mind “Hell has no fury like a woman who has been scorned These days the leaders and head of the home have become selfish lovers of selves Children are misguided and women turn from natural affection which points to hell Christ is consistent from beginning to end and his arms are opened as he waits We are the ones who move from Him, but will we return before it is too late? We cannot hide it, change it, erase it, or correct it once it is completed Only Christ can stand before the throne for us while we remain seated Once a sin is done, there is nothing we can do as it is inked in stone Only Christ can forgive us for sinning, cover it or say “sin be gone” How can the things already done be corrected, changed or taken away? Christ can cover them with His blood and we can start over from today We have to listen to the Holy Spirit because my God cannot and has never lied If the Holy Spirit can not be heard, it has been grieved, or the person has never tried Keep Gods word in your mind, on your lips and most of all in your hearts This is how to stay ahead of temptations and prevent the sin before it starts No matter how small or how large it may be, the wages of sin is death Remember when sin is done by the believer, we crucify Christ afresh We cannot hide it, change it, erase it, or correct it once it is completed Only Christ can stand before the throne for us while we remain seated Once a sin is done, there is nothing we can do as it is inked in stone Only Christ can forgive us for sinning, cover it or say “sin be gone” Copyright© 2007, by Arene |

Some were labeled when brought to this country against their free will Some labels run deep and hurt us still Some were labeled as being a boy or a girl Some labels are obvious when we are born into this world Some were labeled because of nature or by an individual’s choice Some labels are quiet while others have a loud voice Some labels were given to children that set them up to fail Some labels are now homeless, hopeless, helpless, deceased or in jail I am not necessarily the label you give because of what you think you see No matter what label I am given, I can only be me For now- just call me by my name, Arene Copyright©, 2007 by Arene |

What
is behind the story this time of a young brother shot down before
he was to wed?
Was
it necessary for fifty bullets to be discharged before it would
result in him being dead?
In
this day, are we still faced with the same injustices of yesterday
as we shall not forget?
Are
the same prejudices passed down through generations tucked behind
plastic smiles and volleyed through invisible
nets?
Is it
still an assumption that the Black man on the street is always up
to no good?
Is it
the thought still that the Black man does not care about his own
neighborhood?
Perhaps it is in the subconscious mind that the Black
man is uninformed and does not care?
Do
some still hold the thought the Black man is uneducated and of the
oppressive undermining is not astutely aware?
Is it
the way he looks that causes fear in others or the concentration of
determination in achieving his goals?
Or
the fear that if the truth be made known who really built the
pyramids more lies would unfold?
Is it
the stereotypical idea that the Black man is a pimp, drug dealer or
prison mate forever?
Is it
the media’s portrayal of the Black man in a bad light which is used
as a tool to undermine
his character?
Is it
the Black man who is seen as a sell-out causing his own nation to
fall?
Like
the one who goes along with the program instead of us, he says you
all?
What
really causes another man to destroy another or even think to tread
upon his God given rights?
Perhaps it is only the stereotypical prejudices because
of another’s color which determines another’s
plight?
Just
like you, the Black man is a man who takes pride in all the good he
does
Perfectly capable of what we call success and
definitely full of love
When
coupled with the love for God, he takes care of his
own
He
stands tall and he is respected as the head of his
home
I
should not have fear of losing him to violence when he is in or out
of my sight
Neither at the hands of a criminal, or from the law
which is definitely not right!
As a
Black woman, I will fight the fight I need to support my brother
and I will never stop trying
Perhaps some day, there will be equality in mankind and
my eyes will stop their crying
Only
God can set this thing right and only He knows the reasons
why
Until
He settles the ungodly injustices our Black men suffer, my eyes may
never dry

Love the One
You Are With: "It's Not Who You Think"
|
 |
I used to go over and over in my mind
Why things did not work out this time
I then realized where I went wrong
Thinking I had control to make a house a home
If God has not blessed the union of the two,
When troubles arise, there may be nothing you can do
It so important to wait for His blessing
Or you will learn a valuable lesson
Ladies do not think to change a man
He will be who he is, please understand
Once a man is grown, his character is set
Only God can change him, so you get what you get
Oh, men I can not leave you out
You think that that cutie will make you scream and shout
What you will get is someone who is vile and vain
Your constant need to check on her will drive you insane
Listen to me because you know I speak the truth
You might be attracted to Jezebel, better wait for your Ruth
O.K. kids, it seems to be your turn once again
Don’t want to take the slow boat; therefore, this message goes on the fast train
There is always a good example set before you to follow
Lessons that are good for you are sometimes hard to swallow
Do not blame others when you are grown for your life if it is bad
Instead of setting yourself up to be happy you chose to be sad
I am not talking as someone who does not know
I did not concentrate on where I came from but where I wanted to go
I am from East St. Louis Illinois, which is considered the ghetto
From a family of 15 children so my socioeconomic class history was quite low
I respected my parents who seemed to be on one accord
I was not given everything I wanted but abundant love we could afford
There were many who succeeded and gave back to their hood
This is where I believe did most of us some good
The point I am trying to make may not come out so clear
If not in your household, then look for the next thing that is near
A teacher, a principal, a preacher, a doctor, a hairdresser, an athlete, a judge, or a lawyer,
Hell, if you have to work a job to help out at home, then look at your employer
God always provides a chance for us to succeed
If we really think about it, He does take care of our needs
So this one is for all those who think they can not make it through
Think of Jesus, Job, Moses, Ruth, Mary and do not forget about you
There is none other or a more precious gift
Than to be married to Jesus Christ, so love the one you’re with

It used to be your
friend was really your friend when I was
young
Mothers taught their
daughters and fathers taught their sons
It used to be o.k. to
walk to school and stop to tell a stranger the
directions
Now when we vote we are
confused and we even question the elections
It used to be that
sitting down at dinner as a family was valued time
together
Nowadays days it is a
rarity if the original family unit has survived the stormy
weather
It used to be that our
elderly were taken care of and treasured by the family
unit
Nowadays it is seen at
as a burden and the nursing homes and paid help are left to do
it
It used to be that
someone would stay home to raise our treasured
future
Nowadays better luck
getting with an older mate because young is not necessarily
pure
It used to be that a
man took pride in being a man by taking care of his
flesh
Nowadays he will fool
around although married but stay because he’ll pay
less
It used to be that
teachers were held in high respect and their life was a good
example
Nowadays some are not
qualified and when sex is needed they use our kids as
samples
It used to be that
people were kind and nice to their neighbors and we all did get
along
Nowadays it is hard
even for the choir members in a church to agree to sing a
song
It used to be that when
a girl got pregnant while in school, she married or was sent
away
Nowadays she’ll stay
put because of all the lawsuits filed up to this
day
It used to be that a
man was excused for his infidelity as boys will just be
boys
Nowadays some die like
flies trying to stay hard and women still resort to their
toys
It used to be that you
could retire from a job and be able to live a life of
peace
Nowadays consider it a
blessing if you earn a pension before you are
deceased
It used to be a
Christian could get a Christian from the church and not consider
what each other was
Nowadays it is a gamble
because of the down low factor so some may do better at the
club
One thing remains
constant: God is God yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is still
He.
Yea, I may be
considered a “youngin” by some of them, but I am still part of the
“Generation Used to Be”

Our knowledge has
increased and we know a simple kiss is not just a
kiss
Of Hepatitis A, B, C,
D and E, do you know which one says “Do you want some of
this?
Think those noncoital
practices are o.k. especially with whoever comes your way?
When you are faced
with a disease you cannot pronounce like “Nongonococcal Urethritis”
what will you say?
Oh fellas, you think
you prefer that other lady instead of your God given
wife?
When your urine burns
like fire, will you have the decency to tell your wife?
And ladies you think
you are slick as we so often can be
How will you break the
news to your God given husband of Herpes Simplex
Three?
Young children, mostly
teens, this is especially for you
Thinking your parent
does not know what it is that you do?
When you get caught up
in the game the first thing you want to do is
die
Your parent tries to
prevent you from making mistakes and this is the reason
why
God has instructed the
parent to raise you up in the Lord so that you will return if you
stray
So if your parent is
telling you something, it is for your good- listen to them
o.k!
People you better
listen, as I am inspired to warn you in this
poem.
God is the same
yesterday, today and tomorrow so consider your self
warned!

Want to go to heaven, but
too afraid to change? Want to be like Jesus, but
yet remain the same? Jesus loves you too much to
let you be in misery Instead of modeling Jesus,
Satan says “Hey kid, come hang out with me!” The Word says iniquity shall
not abound If sin is what you are
hanging onto, do not expect to be around When the books are opened
which one will have your name? The book of life or that of
death depends on if your are changed
